These Are The Most Devastating Tsunamis Recorded In History

We all have seen movies about the end of the world. Somehow, they always include a tsunami as part of the dramatic-effects. However, have you ever wondered why? Well, possibly because tsunamis can be some of the most destructive natural catastrophes, ever. And while movies are often fictional, don’t get it wrong, because real-life tsunamis exist, and are just as powerful. In this post, we look back at the most devastating tsunamis recorded in modern history.

First Of All, What Causes Tsunamis To Happen?

The power of nature is absolutely incredible. Tsunamis look like huge waves that are super strong and fast, right? Yet, how Tsunamis are formed is what gives them their fascinating destructive power.

According to Australian Geographic, tsunamis occur due to a ”significant displacement of water in oceans or lakes, though are most commonly created by the movement of tectonic plates under the ocean floor.” While earthquakes are considered the most common cause of this natural phenomenon, other reasons such volcanic eruption, glacial carving, or meteorite impacts can be behind just as much destruction.

Indonesia – December 2004

The mot destructive Tsunami ever recorded in history, is undoubtedly, the one that happened in Sumatra, Indonesia on December 26th, 2004. A  9.1 magnitude earthquake, occurred at a depth of 30 km in the coast of Sumatra. In fact, this tsunami generated 50 m waves, reaching 5 km inland. In addition, it caused US$10b losses, and 230,000 people were reported dead. As a consequence, wave height raised even in other regions of the world, such as Antartica, US, and the UK.

Japan – March 2011

Japanese shoreline recorded the second most devastating tsunami in history. On March 11th, 2011, the pacific coast of Japan woke up on one of their deadliest natural disasters. An earthquake of a 9.0 magnitude, leading to a tsunami travelling 800km per hour with 10m-high waves. This caused the death of more than 18,000 people, and the relocation of over 452,000 people after their homes were destroyed.

Portugal- November 1755

Furthermore, on the European side, less tsunamis took place. However, one of the most devastating tsunamis that passed through the old continent, dates back to November 1st, 1755, which took place in Lisbon, Portugal. Again, due to a 8.5 magnitude hurricane, series of three huge waves struck the west-coast of Portugal, and a part of south-Spain. Waves that reached 30 m high, ended up killing more than 60,000 in Portugal, Morocco and Spain.

What To Do With Your Money If There Is An Economic Crisis?

What To Do With Your Money If There Is An Economic Crisis?

It’s undeniable that the Coronavirus crisis is shaping the world. Now, we do not know what will happen in the future, especially economically speaking. While many people speculate a potential world-wide economic crisis, the big question is: What to do with your money now?

Moreover, it’s normal to be financially insecure, especially with an uncertain future ahead. However, the good news is that there are several things you can do to keep your money “safe” in case the markets crash. Actually, in the best case scenario, your savings may even increase if you’re willing to take the risk.

Invest In Gold

No, we are not referring to a gold watch or chain, but to gold bars. Gold has always been a safe haven, since its price does not usually fall during crises. In fact, according to Forbes, gold was one of the highest-performing investments in 2019. Also, it’s pretty easy to hide, either in your home or in a personal bank safe (yes, just like in movies). The best part is that you can buy as much (or as little) as you can afford. From thousands of bars to a few grams. So, even if you do not have much money, you can still invest.

What About The Stock Market?

Furthermore, if you don’t mind risking a part of your money for the possibility of winning more, this is your moment. Although, that requires you to investigate before, and not just jump at the opportunity. Because if we buy the right shares with the right company, we can not only avoid the crisis but not have benefits. However, there is always the risk that if the company goes bankrupt, we may end up loosing it all. Actually, people who invest in indices, instead of trusting a single company, they trust all those that make up the index. So betting that the US DowJones or the Spanish Ibex35 raises is less risky than trusting that one single company will.

Leave Your Money Alone

Te most important thing to do with your money, is knowing what you do before starting to invest. So, if you do not see yourself knowledgeable enough to invest in the stock market, it is best not to do so. And since there are many people who do not trust keeping their valuables at home, gold is no longer an option either. However, there is the traditional alternative of banks.

In fact, you can leave your money in your account or put it in a savings account that generates enough for you to fight inflation (approximately 2%). This ensures that you don’t lose purchasing power. Even if the worst possible scenario occurred and the bank looses, there would be no need to worry, because most countries have a system that protects accounts with up to 100,000 euros.

Are Female Leaders Managing The Covid19 Crisis Better?

The Covid-19 crisis is leaving the entire world in front of tough situation. Not only that is effecting people and sanitary departments directly, the economic recess that is causing might be catastrophic. Different nations adopted different strategies to confront the Coronavirus aftermath. However, and despite the drastic measures that have been taken, the struggle is still real. Furthermore, numbers and statistics are showing a pattern among countries that are handling the situation a bit better than others. And the main common point could just be that they all have female leaders.

Female Leaders Have A Positive History In Crisis Management

According to Forbes, women in positions of power have had a slight better crisis management than their men counterpart. In fact, during the 2008 worldwide economic crisis, women heading the financial departments of their countries ” suffered less from the global economic crisis.” In Europe, and after the crisis ended, governments ” increased female board representation in big banks from 15% to 33%.” Furthermore, the current pandemic drew attention to how world leaders are managing the crisis, which led to witnessing that some of the countries doing slightly better, all have in common a female leader.

Strict lockdown or confinement is currently the only possible cure to the coronavirus. In the absence of a vaccine or a cure, limiting the spread of the virus must be controlled through the population. Obviously, this affects heavily the cultural, economic and tourism sectors. However, countries like Germany, new Zealand, Norway and Sweden didn’t rush to impose a total lockdown on their people. Yet, their numbers are showing to be among the least scary, as oppose to the US, Italy and Spain, who despite their strict response, their numbers are still increasing everyday.

Studies Suggest That Women Are Better Equipped For Handling Pandemics

Although the statistics are not sufficient to draw solid conclusions, they do give us an Idea. Countries with female leaders have been more successful in controlling the Covid19 pandemic. In terms of testing capacity, death tolls, as well as recoveries. Moreover, several quantitative studies support the claim that women are better equipped to handle a health crisis, including a pandemic. In addition to having a lower risk of picking up the illness than men, research showed that certain qualities in women in times of crisis allow them to react better.

Here Are Few Perks Of Confinement To Stay Positive Through It

Yes, being stuck at home only being able to go out for essentials sucks. We miss our friends, going out for drinks or just the simple act of taking a walk on a sunny day. However, given the current circumstances, the only effective method to stop Coronavirus is confinement. Think about it this way: Our ancestors had to go to war, but we are privileged enough to be asked to just stay home in order to save lives. Although it’s perfectly normal to feel anxious, stressed and emotionally vulnerable, there are few perks of confinement, that should help you stay positive through it.

Saving Money

Remember how any times you complained about not saving money. In fact, we all have been endlessly trying to convince ourselves to spend less on eating-out, and cook at home instead. Well, guess what? One of the few perks of confinement, is that you can finally save that cash you usually spend on nights out and restaurants. So, when this is all over, you will maybe have saved enough money to treat yourself to that trip you’ve been dreaming about!

Getting Enough Sleep

In addition to saving money, confinement is also helping you save energy. Regardless of wether you are taking online classes, or tele-working, one of the few perks of confinement is getting enough sleep. Furthermore, doing things from home just makes it all easier. You can cook fresh food instead of having to do meal-preps due to your tight schedule. In addition, you are able to set your alarm clock back, and add more ”sleep time” since you will be saving yourself the time of showering, getting ready, and getting yourself to work/school.

Taking A Break

As we mentioned before, the aftermath of the confinement is rather heavier on our mental health. However, if you start doing things right, it may actually be fruitful for you to take a break. Now, we all have some extra-time to do the things we couldn’t do before, since we had busy daily schedules. Seriously, in the midst of all the rush, stress and routine, this confinement is an opportunity to just take break from it all.

Having Time For Self-Care

Treat yourself to long baths, hair&facial masks, and even to learn new recipes. Instead of looking at the down-part of being stuck at home, really immerse yourself in enjoying it. Exercise, clean, do some meditation or yoga, watch Netflix and chill. There are multiple ways to care for your well being, that will make you remain positive and realize just how much you needed this.

Being Grateful

You know, it’s in times of hardships that we realize just how great our life really is. As part of our human nature, we always want more than we have. But, when you are excluded, and a sudden change affects your daily routine, you realize just how ‘blessed’ you were. Enjoy being with your loved ones, and if you are alone, take the time to reflect and bond with yourself. Start a diary to keep track of what you’ve achieved, to set new goals for the future, and above all, be grateful for all you have.
