Body odor is the most honest form of communication

Smell

Our smell is one of the most powerful senses we have. It allows you to remember things, people, or even places; it helps you decide whether you like something; and it can even help you fall in love with someone, however bizarre this must sound.

Smell can be positive, but also negative

It’s key to realise how much body odor affects our daily lives in order to truly exploit the benefits it can have for us. It can be a real deal-breaker when choosing a parter, or it can be, in turn, a point in favour.

perfume

Odor sticks around in our minds

When we smell an odor we like, we are able to remember, and even recognise it in the future. What is interesting to note, though, is that what most sticks around in people’s brains is natural body odor, rather than perfumes or deodorant smells, like people tend to believe.

Give your sweat another chance

sweat

In fact, quite the opposite of what we believed to be true occurs. When we kill the bacteria that is our sweat with deodorant, this natural odor is hidden and the production of sweat decreases. This doesn’t play in our favour, however much we might think it does.

Sweat is attractive

Two people who are getting to know each other will most likely find that their experiences feel more intimate when leaving out the “deodorant” factor: both parties play with body odors and attraction.

couple

The scent glands

This body odor we’ve been talking about comes especially from the sweat glandes, which can be found in our armpits. These glandes are the biggest apocrine glands in our bodies.

Apocrine glands are scent glands – this means that what they secrete has a smell to it. In other words, these glands control the smell we produce, which helps us find a partner.

Sweat

The apocrine glands are actually very useful for two reasons: they can prevent endogamy and they also make us capable of evaluating the other person’s health. This happens because a person’s sweat odor changes with disease and infection.

Free health evaluations

Body odor even reflects what we eat. And if your mind has not been blown by now, then keep reading. If you eat healthily, someone else’s sense of smell can pick it up. The same happens with unhealthy food. We are continually registering health evaluations from the people around us, though we might not actively realise it.

Men vs. women

eat

Another important aspect when talking about body odor, is the differences between men and women. They can be quite significant. Women tend to have a better sense of smell.

They usually become attracted to smells generated from diets that are rich in eggs, cheese, soya, and fruits and vegetables. In turn, women tend to dislike people with diets rich in red meat. Who would have thought.

Vegetables

Men, on the other hand, have a worse sense of smell than women, making them incapable of detecting such details. Women naturally judge more based on odors, than men.

Don’t judge a book by its smell

Body odor forms an opinion in our minds on someone before even talking to them. Just by shaking their hand or greeting them, we already perceive the odor they give off, which generates a reaction in us that helps us decide whether we like said person, or not. This might be a reason as to why we feel we dislike a person without actually knowing them.

Fossil is found that confirms unicorns walked the earth

Unicorn

Unicorns have always been believed to be non-existing mythological creatures. In fact, it’s a creature that seems so alien to us, that the term now has a wide array of contexts. In other words, we refer as “unicorn” to things or people that we believe are unique, rare or of high value.

It now seems we’re going to have to change how we view the world we live in: a unicorn fossil has been found, and it’s not even that old.

Not so long ago

Unicorns

A unicorn fossil had previously been found in Kazakhstan, but it looked as though our precious horse of a single horn had become extinct 350,000 years ago. With this new fossil, it seems like they were around until not so long ago.

Similar to a mammoth

However exciting this finding can be, it seems that unicorns did not look like the perfect being we thought they were. The fossil belongs to a Siberian unicorn, also known as “Elasmotherium sibiricum“. If you don’t know what this means, try to imagine something similar to a rhino, or even a mammoth, rather than a slender, white horse.

Rhino

A unicorn’s measurements

Experts claim the unicorn would have been around 2 metres tall and 4 and a half metres long. It would have been as heavy as 4 tons, which more or less equals 2 and a half pallets of red bricks.

What does concur with our imagination is the horn right on the unicorn’s forehead as well as the long fur it would have had. Now you know this, it’s your task to set someone straight if they say unicorns didn’t exist!

How to find out if someone’s a compulsive liar

We’ve all lied at some point in our lives, whether it be harmless white lies or more important lies to get out of trouble. It’s in our nature to lie. In fact, telling someone we are fine even when we’re not is still a lie. You might even believe not all lies are bad, especially when it’s in our own benefit, or in someone else’s. But don’t forget: “liar, liar, pants on fire“.

Not telling the truth becomes a habit

However, on the other extreme of the spectrum we can find the so-called “compulsive liar“. These kind of people have turned lying into a hobby, and are already very far from telling lies as a benefit to someone. In fact, they have created a habit out of not telling the truth. They even get to the point where they lie about lying.

Liar

Pay close attention

To find out if someone is a compulsive liar you will have to pay close attention to their actions and what they say; and even to how they say it. We give you some tips to find out if the person is, indeed, a compulsive liar. You’ll see you’ll find out quicker than you think.

1. Bragging is their hobby

Bragging is a clear red flag. Compulsive liars are people who constantly feel the need to prove themselves, and they want to show you they have knowledge on every possible topic. Bragging is an obvious sign because pathological liars try to prove what they know by being seemingly humble. To achieve this, they create a so-called “fake modesty”.

bragging

To better explain this point: it’s one of those people who would tell you they “feel bad” for being invited to an exclusive event because they are friends with all of the guests. If you know what I mean.

2. No guilt whatsoever

When someone is lying you can usually tell from a certain sense of discomfort they give out. This comes from the guilt they experience from lying. In other words, a compulsive liar would experience no discomfort whatsoever because there is no guilt: they are not capable of feeling empathy. They believe their lies do not harm anybody, and even if they did, they wouldn’t care.

No guilt

3. Me, myself and I

Pathological liars are selfish human beings. They always put themselves first, above anything or anyone. Here we have to go back to the “fake-modesty” we talked about before. They try no to act in obvious ways: they obtain what they want by seeming humble.

4. They are defensive

If you have ever encountered a compulsive liar, you’ll be able to remember their reaction that one time you “uncovered” one of their lies. They probably seemed furious, rather than guilty or afraid. What they do is project their lie onto you by deviating you attention through questions, or accusing you of not trusting them, a classic. Their turn the guilt onto you.

defensive

5. It’s likely they believe their own lies

These extreme liars usually end up believing their own lies, because they truly wish their lies were real. They think about it so carefully and extensively that, to them, it becomes organic. This is a point in favour of the liar: the inconvenience seizes to exist and they have no problem lying.

Question

It can be hard to uncover such lies because they have been extensively thought through, but it’s not impossible. Think about a question they haven’t possibly considered; something out of the box. This will throw them off.

6. Lying is their comfort zone

It is easy to detect a lie when the liar gives off signs of discomfort: they might avoid visual contact or start to sweat. To a pathological liar, lying is is what floats their boat: they are inside their comfort zone. They often even find it harder to tell the truth than to lie.

7. You end up questioning yourself

Insegura

It’s probable that a compulsive liar is full of confidence. This happens because of the “fusion” of the diverse behaviours that takes place. It allows them to turn the tables and place the blame on you. They make you question what you believe, and you end up questioning yourself.

Compulsive liars are very toxic people, so if you know anyone with these traits, keep away!

“Karoshi”: the death wave of the overworked Japanese

Worker

“Karoshi” is the name given to the latest cause of death of a very high number of Japanese workers. It’s caused by the excess of work and stress that Japanese people undergo every day.

Long shifts and few sleeping hours

In Japan, it is very normal to have a 12-hour shift and have very few hours of sleep: the average sleeping time per night is six and a half hours. Could you even imagine? On top of that, the Japanese only have around 9 paid vacation days per year.

Working

Japanese culture

If that weren’t enough already, according to Japanese culture, the workers cannot leave their offices before their bosses do, and afterwork karaoke is a must at the end of every work day, which might sound very nice, but you can imagine how tired one can be after such shifts.

This hectic lifestyle has been the cause of death of thousands of Japanese civilians for decades. It has become so common it has even adopted its own name in Japan: “karoshi“.

Japanese

“Karoshi” is increasingly extending

The term was first acknowledged in 1987, when the Health Ministry started obtaining data on this phenomenon. At first, the death rate started with a couple of hundreds per year, but it has been increasing since. Official numbers now include up to 10,000 deaths annually.

Compensation for the relatives

This cause of death is so extended there is even an official “compensation law” for the victim’s relatives: if “karoshi” has been determined as the clear cause of death, relatives obtain around $20,000 from the government, and payments of up to $1,6 million from the company itself.

How to (successfully) ask your boss for a raise

Asking for a raise is often a difficult task. We mostly feel awkward and we just don’t know how to do it. Sometimes, we take what we believe is the easy way out: we go up to our bosses with the “I-have-a-better-offer” approach, leaving them with no choice but to either raise our salary, or fire us.

interview

The best strategy

This might seem like the perfect strategy, but it actually really is not. The only thing you obtain from this “technique” is making your boss feel like they have their back against the wall, without any alternatives on how to manage the situation.

According to Retina‘s BATMA (“best alternative to a negotiated agreement”) study, the three keys to negotiating a raise are actually: information, psychology and a position of power.

suit

Get what you want

In order to obtain what you want, it’s important to make the person you communicate with feel like they, too, can get what they desire. Otherwise you will just come over as threatening, which nobody really likes.

Use information in your favour

It is important to realise how information works, and how to use it in your favour. Negotiating takes time, so making sure you understand all of the factors involving your raise is key to play your cards well.

Boss

You must have an extensive knowledge on the negotiator’s profile. The conversation will not be the same if the person is from the human resources department, meaning they don’t have knowledge on your actual work record; or if they are your direct superior, meaning they do know you and what you’ve accomplished.

Talking to your superior

If the latter is the case, you have to understand what personality or profession traits they find important, make sure they know your worth inside the company and how you’ve contributed to it, etc. Make yourself worthy of the raise, and have them believe it too. Show them you are.

Boss

Be confident

You won’t give the same impression if you walk up to them confidently than if you walk in eyes-to-the-ground and shaking. What you transmit plays a big part in negotiating. Emotional intelligence is vital.

This means that although you might feel like sitting in a corner crying, you have to be able to control your emotions when speaking. Make them believe you are unbreakable. A great tip is taking advantage of the emotional link you might have with the company.

confident

A position of power

It is an oftentimes argued discussion whether or not your power position influences the negotiation. It seems to be proven that the more power you feel like you have, the more implicated you feel in the discussion. This applies not only to you, but also to your colleagues. However, feeling more involved does not necessarily mean it will be a direct benefit.

Negotiation

From this, we can conclude that you must make sure you know your position, and from there on you must fight for what you want. Power has a big subjective part to it, so focus on the tangible: the money you want.

How to work from home and stay sane in the process

Home

Working from home might sound like the perfect way to earn money: not having to deal with irritating people; not having to get dressed; and above all, having the possibility to work while watching TV or eating. However, what most people don’t realize is that working from home can pose a real challenge, especially for our minds.

In order to do so, it is important to stay focused and to try not to lose your mind. We give you some tips to be able to work from home without losing it in the process.

Create a routine

planning

Creating a routine might not seem like the most exciting task to fulfill, however, it is essential if you want to get things done and be productive. The routine should adjust to your necessities and allow you to accomplish your objectives.

It will be very helpful for your mind, as it will keep things organized up there, and it will prevent stress from invading your life. It will also keep you from focusing on trivial distractions, as well as distributing your time efficiently, in order not to waste any.

Get yourself a pet

Pet

Owning a pet has several advantages, amongst which we can find having to take care of it. This will help us leave the house from time to time, as we will have to walk it or take it to the vet. Disconnecting from work is equally important.

Do not isolate yourself

Working from home means having no co-workers to talk to. So an important task you will have is socializing more often. Being on your own day after day can have serious consequences for your mental health.

friends

Go out with your friends, or take part in outdoor activities. Even if you don’t feel like doing any of this, you can always talk to people through applications like Skype or FaceTime. A video-call is highly recommended, instead of a regular call. This is because interaction will feel “realer”, and you will keep in touch with the outside world.

Mind what you feed yourself

Working from home makes it very easy to put on some pounds if we don’t watch what we ingest. We already spend a big portion of the day sat down working, and if we put this together with and unhealthy diet, we create the perfect recipe for disaster: the pounds will fly on.

Eating

This means that following a healthy diet is almost a must if we want to stay fit and work from home at the same time. Our diets also drastically affect our moods, and how we feel about life.

Work out regularly

Working out

It is indisputable that there are thousands of reasons why working out is essential to stay healthy, and working from home makes it even more important. Working out doesn’t necessarily mean long gym sessions, but it is crucial you move around quite a bit.

Exercising secretes endorphins, which help you improve your mood and put an end to stress. This will allow you to go back to work with a changed perspective. As has been previously stated, even just leaving the house or going for a walk is already enough, so the excuse of having “no time” is not valid.
