How to (successfully) ask your boss for a raise

Asking for a raise is often a difficult task. We mostly feel awkward and we just don’t know how to do it. Sometimes, we take what we believe is the easy way out: we go up to our bosses with the “I-have-a-better-offer” approach, leaving them with no choice but to either raise our salary, or fire us.

interview

The best strategy

This might seem like the perfect strategy, but it actually really is not. The only thing you obtain from this “technique” is making your boss feel like they have their back against the wall, without any alternatives on how to manage the situation.

According to Retina‘s BATMA (“best alternative to a negotiated agreement”) study, the three keys to negotiating a raise are actually: information, psychology and a position of power.

suit

Get what you want

In order to obtain what you want, it’s important to make the person you communicate with feel like they, too, can get what they desire. Otherwise you will just come over as threatening, which nobody really likes.

Use information in your favour

It is important to realise how information works, and how to use it in your favour. Negotiating takes time, so making sure you understand all of the factors involving your raise is key to play your cards well.

Boss

You must have an extensive knowledge on the negotiator’s profile. The conversation will not be the same if the person is from the human resources department, meaning they don’t have knowledge on your actual work record; or if they are your direct superior, meaning they do know you and what you’ve accomplished.

Talking to your superior

If the latter is the case, you have to understand what personality or profession traits they find important, make sure they know your worth inside the company and how you’ve contributed to it, etc. Make yourself worthy of the raise, and have them believe it too. Show them you are.

Boss

Be confident

You won’t give the same impression if you walk up to them confidently than if you walk in eyes-to-the-ground and shaking. What you transmit plays a big part in negotiating. Emotional intelligence is vital.

This means that although you might feel like sitting in a corner crying, you have to be able to control your emotions when speaking. Make them believe you are unbreakable. A great tip is taking advantage of the emotional link you might have with the company.

confident

A position of power

It is an oftentimes argued discussion whether or not your power position influences the negotiation. It seems to be proven that the more power you feel like you have, the more implicated you feel in the discussion. This applies not only to you, but also to your colleagues. However, feeling more involved does not necessarily mean it will be a direct benefit.

Negotiation

From this, we can conclude that you must make sure you know your position, and from there on you must fight for what you want. Power has a big subjective part to it, so focus on the tangible: the money you want.

Why you don’t have energy and how to get it back

Do you feel like you used to be full of energy but now you’ve just lost it? Would you like to get home and do something other than throwing yourself onto the couch?

Couch

Feeling energyless is more common than you think

Lacking energy often causes us to feel groggy and can sometimes even keep us from having a proper conversation. If you’ve already talked to your nutritionist, or tried to find a solution but nothing seems to be working, you might want to realize that feeling good does not just depend on food and exercise.

Tired

Nutrition and exercise is not enough

These two factors are obviously crucial, and you should never forget about them. However, your nutrition and work out are but two tools. In the sense that if you were to bake a cake, food and exercise would only be two ingredients inside a whole list of them. So, although you couldn’t bake a cake without the two, you also wouldn’t be able to bake one without the rest of the ingredients.

Exercise

Explained with numbers

Number-wise, one workout can be for example between 15 and 30 minutes long, and eating would take up around 1 to 3 hours daily. In other words, it just makes up between 3 and 4 hours of daily energy optimization. Unfortunately, the other 12 hours of being awake are empty.

Lazy

Optimization

The solution to this lack of energy is optimizing your whole day for energy, which unfortunately depends on the person. This is not one of them “one size fits all” things. So it’s important you find what best suits you. A solution would be having a custom tailored plan made that fits your schedule.

Trainer

Finding the cause and the right solution

The important thing is that you discover what best suits you. Problems causing lack of energy often include things like too much pressure, no self-care, a low sleep quality, not working out enough (or even too much) and not eating the right food suited for your body.

The problem is that we try to find solutions in things that are really not helping us, like for example coffee, supplements, energy drinks or nootropics.

Your newest pet peeve: WhatsApp ads

Ads are something that slowly but surely have been creeping into our lives, and they are product of the consumerist world we live in. Everywhere we look there are marketing teams trying to sell us products, however useless these may be. The latest way into our minds seems to be through the most used app on our phones: WhatsApp.

whatsapp

A broken “no ads” promise

WhatsApp will be including ads inside their application, despite having promised they would never. When the makers of the app launched WhatsApp, they said they wouldn’t include any ads, ever. The problem is that Facebook took it over, and now they plan on increasingly slipping in ads.

phone

We still have some time to prepare ourselves

WhatsApp will be introducing ads from 2020 onwards. They are not immediately introducing the ads because, as they argued at the Facebook Marketing Summit that is taking place in Rotterdam (Holland), ads have already arrived to other apps that also swore they would never have advertising, like for example, Pinterest.

Bye-bye #Whatsapp, Hello @telegram
.
Whatsapp new ads set to launch in 2020..!! Is its end near?
.
It will work like #Instagram Stories, you will be able to swipe up to go to a website associated with the brand.

It’s not as bad as it seems

However much advertisement invading our phones might terrify us, we ought not to worry (yet). For now, our private chats will stay free of ads. They will only be included inside the WhatsApp statuses. In other words, they will start by introducing Stories Ads.

What the ads will look like

The fact that only our WhatsApp stories will be filled with ads seems to be positive: not all users make use of them. In fact, these ads will be very similar to the ads that Instagram has brought in.

They will appear in between users’ stories, and you will be able to click on them for more information, or swipe with your finger to get rid of them. However, it is worth to mention that the company has not, in fact, denied that they’re thinking about including chat ads in the future.

10. Istria, Croatia

If you’re one to day-dream about walking through medieval villages and bright-green, fertile valleys, this is your destination. Often compared to the Toscane because of its ravishing landscapes, Istria is perfect if you love the small-town-rural-farm feeling. You’ll also be able to indulge with the gastronomy treasures, in this heart-shaped peninsula.

Istria

Another point in favour of Istria is that this region thrives from tourism, so locals will most probably speak your language, meaning there won’t be any communication problems.

How to work from home and stay sane in the process

Home

Working from home might sound like the perfect way to earn money: not having to deal with irritating people; not having to get dressed; and above all, having the possibility to work while watching TV or eating. However, what most people don’t realize is that working from home can pose a real challenge, especially for our minds.

In order to do so, it is important to stay focused and to try not to lose your mind. We give you some tips to be able to work from home without losing it in the process.

Create a routine

planning

Creating a routine might not seem like the most exciting task to fulfill, however, it is essential if you want to get things done and be productive. The routine should adjust to your necessities and allow you to accomplish your objectives.

It will be very helpful for your mind, as it will keep things organized up there, and it will prevent stress from invading your life. It will also keep you from focusing on trivial distractions, as well as distributing your time efficiently, in order not to waste any.

Get yourself a pet

Pet

Owning a pet has several advantages, amongst which we can find having to take care of it. This will help us leave the house from time to time, as we will have to walk it or take it to the vet. Disconnecting from work is equally important.

Do not isolate yourself

Working from home means having no co-workers to talk to. So an important task you will have is socializing more often. Being on your own day after day can have serious consequences for your mental health.

friends

Go out with your friends, or take part in outdoor activities. Even if you don’t feel like doing any of this, you can always talk to people through applications like Skype or FaceTime. A video-call is highly recommended, instead of a regular call. This is because interaction will feel “realer”, and you will keep in touch with the outside world.

Mind what you feed yourself

Working from home makes it very easy to put on some pounds if we don’t watch what we ingest. We already spend a big portion of the day sat down working, and if we put this together with and unhealthy diet, we create the perfect recipe for disaster: the pounds will fly on.

Eating

This means that following a healthy diet is almost a must if we want to stay fit and work from home at the same time. Our diets also drastically affect our moods, and how we feel about life.

Work out regularly

Working out

It is indisputable that there are thousands of reasons why working out is essential to stay healthy, and working from home makes it even more important. Working out doesn’t necessarily mean long gym sessions, but it is crucial you move around quite a bit.

Exercising secretes endorphins, which help you improve your mood and put an end to stress. This will allow you to go back to work with a changed perspective. As has been previously stated, even just leaving the house or going for a walk is already enough, so the excuse of having “no time” is not valid.

Google’s new translator tool that speaks just like you

Google calls their newest invention the “Translatotron” and it simultaneously translates what you say by copying your voice, tone and cadence.

Google

Translation programmes

Up until now, Google has been the most famous translator on the Internet. By typing in one word you are directly forwarded to it. Google even included a tool that can translate text to voice, text to text and voice o text. However, the voice tool always has the standard “Google” voice, which speaks like a robot and is very monotonous.

Translator

A communication barrier

What usually happens with regular translation programmes is that a lot of communication gets lost in the “process”, so to say. In other words, these kind of tools translate sentences word for word, meaning they don’t capture the essence of slang, expressions and other aspects of spoken communication. If it’s sometimes already hard enough to speak to others, imagine if you had to depend on such translation tools.

Speaking

Google’s Translatotron

Thus, what is so exciting about Google’s new invention, is that is does exactly this: it imitates your voice tone and the cadence of your sentences, which is fundamental in verbal communication.

The system is based on a sequence to sequence model, and works with spectrograms (used to copy voices). The creation is able to retain vocal characteristics from the transmitter, making their speech more natural.

Google

Find out what it sounds like

If you are interested in what these voices might sound like, you can find it here. In the link you will be able to find original voices, conventional translations with the current systems and the results obtained with the application.

Listen to them here

Other translation tools

It’s worth to mention that there are currently other systems, like Vbestlife and Ashata, which follow more or less the same pattern of simultaneous translation, but don’t imitate voices yet. They are available for a wide range of prices that goes from just 25 euros, up to 200.
