Still, if you fly to the island it used to inhabit, you&#8217;ll see some of these birds around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not fossils or bones, actual birds, because this bird is a tough one. After it&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/en\/can-sleeping-too-much-lead-to-your-death\/\">extinction<\/a>, <strong>the evolution came into play and, surprisingly, started repeating itself<\/strong>. How? Apparently, and according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2019-05\/uop-tbt050919.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"this study (se abre en una nueva pesta\u00f1a)\">this study<\/a>, the reason lies in the island itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The lack of predators led to it&#8217;s extinction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/extinct-bird-1.jpg\" alt=\"This extinct bird evolved back into existence\" class=\"wp-image-9741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/extinct-bird-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/extinct-bird-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally, <strong>this birds lacked a natural predator, so they started to lose the ability to fly<\/strong>, one generation at a time. Due to this changes, when the island disappeared below the sea, <strong>the white-throated rail couldn&#8217;t escape. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was 136.000 years ago, and the sea, some time after, backed up, <strong>allowing the island to rise again to the surface<\/strong>. This very moment, the same birds from Madagascar that once colonized the island, <strong>came back<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The evolution kicks in (again)<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madagascar-2.jpg\" alt=\"Baobabs en Madagascar\" class=\"wp-image-9708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madagascar-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madagascar-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the magic happens. <strong>Because after the second colonization of the island, the birds started to develop the same characteristics<\/strong> their predecessors did before them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading to something the scientists call &#8220;<strong>iterative evolution<\/strong>&#8220;. In other words, <strong>the exact same species evolving for the second time<\/strong> after it became extinct. Marking the first time in history we are able to see this phenomenon in birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A unique bird in the Indian Ocean<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madagascar-1.jpg\" alt=\"playa de madagascar\" class=\"wp-image-9705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madagascar-1.jpg 800w, https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/madagascar-1-300x201.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaving this bird who evolved back into existence with <strong>something unique<\/strong>.
