It&#8217;s caused by the<strong> excess of work and stress <\/strong>that Japanese people undergo every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Long shifts and few sleeping hours<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Japan, it is very normal to have a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/06\/01\/japan-has-some-of-the-longest-working-hours-in-the-world-its-trying-to-change.html\"> <\/a><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/06\/01\/japan-has-some-of-the-longest-working-hours-in-the-world-its-trying-to-change.html\">12-hour shift<\/a><\/strong> and have very <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/en\/not-sleeping-well-is-worse-for-you-than-you-thought\/\">few hours of sleep<\/a>: the <a href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/asia\/japan\/articles\/study-shows-japan-is-still-the-nation-that-sleeps-the-least\/\">average sleeping time<\/a> per night is<strong> six and a half hours.<\/strong> Could you even imagine? On top of that, the Japanese only have around <strong>9 paid vacation days per year. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4000\" height=\"2908\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/aditya-romansa-117300-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Working\" class=\"wp-image-4923\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Japanese culture<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If that weren&#8217;t enough already, according to Japanese culture, the workers cannot leave their offices <strong>before their <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/en\/how-to-successfully-ask-your-boss-for-a-raise\/\">bosses<\/a><\/strong> <strong>do<\/strong>, and <strong>afterwork karaoke<\/strong> is a <em><strong>must<\/strong><\/em> at the end of every work day, which might sound very nice, but you can imagine how <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/en\/science-proves-why-napping-is-the-way-to-go\/\">tired<\/a> one can be after such shifts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <strong>hectic lifestyle<\/strong> has been the cause of death of <strong>thousands<\/strong> of Japanese civilians <strong>for decades.<\/strong> It has become so common it has even adopted its own name in Japan: &#8220;<strong><em>karoshi<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4592\" height=\"2584\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/lan-pham-132874-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Japanese\" class=\"wp-image-4927\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8220;<em>Karoshi<\/em>&#8221; is increasingly extending<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The term was first acknowledged in <strong>1987<\/strong>, when the <strong>Health Ministry <\/strong>started obtaining data on this phenomenon. At first, the death rate started with <strong>a couple of hundreds per year<\/strong>, but it has been increasing since. Official numbers now include up to <strong>10,000 deaths annually. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6575\" height=\"4191\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/daan-stevens-282446-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"hospital\" class=\"wp-image-4930\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Compensation for the relatives<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This cause of death is so extended there is even <strong>an official &#8220;compensation law&#8221;<\/strong> for the victim&#8217;s relatives: if &#8220;<em>karoshi<\/em>&#8221; has been determined as the <strong>clear cause of death<\/strong>, relatives obtain around <strong>$20,000 from the government<\/strong>, and payments of up to <strong>$1,6 million from the company itself. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Photos: Unsplash<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Karoshi&#8221; is the term given to an extended cause of death amongst the Japanese workers.
