Slowly but surely, we become more and more aware of what we have done to our planet, and scientists are beginning to say <strong>we only have <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/onearth\/climate-scientists-world-we-have-only-20-years-theres-no-turning-back\"><strong>20 years left<\/strong><\/a><strong> to save it<\/strong>. We are <strong>destroying<\/strong> our planet, and only have<strong> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plantbasednews.org\/post\/humans-destroying-planet-and-one-generation-save-it\"><strong>one generation<\/strong><\/a><strong> to do something about it.<\/strong> Will a diet be able to do so?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4256\" height=\"2832\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/nasa-53884-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Earth\" class=\"wp-image-4041\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The latest solution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to not more and not less than<strong> 37 scientists<\/strong> who have participated at the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2019-01\/tl-pss011419.php\"> EAT-Lancet <\/a>commission, this diet could prevent <strong>11 million deaths a year.<\/strong> They have been investigating, for a long time, about what would be the best way to <strong>feed ourselves while still being respectful with our planet.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enough with the red meat<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/meat-1030729_1920.jpg\" alt=\"Red meat\" class=\"wp-image-4047\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, the key to this diet is a <strong>reduced percentage of meat<\/strong>. <strong>One hamburger or steak a month<\/strong>, and just <strong>a couple of chicken and fish servings a week.<\/strong> The<a href=\"http:\/\/peta.org\/issues\/animals-used-for-food\/meat-environment\/\"> reason behind <\/a>such small amounts of meat is that animal agriculture is <strong>responsible for more greenhouse gases than all of the world&#8217;s transportation systems combined. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the diet consists of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/en\/6-reasons-why-you-need-bananas-to-stay-healthy\/\">fruits<\/a>, vegetables, nuts and legumes. <\/strong>These should fill <strong>half a meal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3456\" height=\"2304\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/sara-dubler-769470-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Healthy\" class=\"wp-image-4051\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the diet consists of:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the diet, we are only allowed <strong>31 grams of sugar<\/strong> a day, and <strong>50 grams of oils<\/strong> (a day) like olive oil. This is what we should ingest in <strong>a day:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Legumes:<\/strong> 75 grams<\/li><li><strong>Nuts<\/strong>: 50 grams<\/li><li><strong>Eggs<\/strong>: An egg and a half a week (13 grams)<\/li><li><strong>Fish<\/strong>: 28 grams<\/li><li><strong>Dairy<\/strong>: 250 grams<\/li><li><strong>Meat<\/strong>: 14 grams of red meat, and 29 grams of chicken<\/li><li><strong>Vegetables<\/strong>: 300 grams<\/li><li><strong>Carbohydrates<\/strong>: 232 grams of bread or wholegrain rice, and 50 grams of starchy vegetables (like potatoes) <\/li><li><strong>Fruit<\/strong>: 200 grams<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Spread the word<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest obstacle for this diet-based solution would be the most obvious one: get a <strong>vast<\/strong> <strong>part of the world to completely change their diets<\/strong>, which seems to be an almost <strong>impossible<\/strong> task. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/jessica-to-oto-o-585172-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Diet\" class=\"wp-image-4053\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is very <strong>difficult<\/strong> for a person to change their diet, but there is a reason behind this, and we have our <strong>primal instincts<\/strong> to thank for. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/behernow\/201709\/why-changing-eating-habits-permanently-is-so-hard\">Long story<\/a> short: we perceive this change as a <strong>threat to our safety<\/strong>, because <strong>food is a part of survival. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This perceived threat to our safety, in turn, provokes a <strong>sense of fear,<\/strong> leading us to running out of &#8220;<strong>willpower<\/strong>&#8221; to follow through on our diets. Thus, if it&#8217;s difficult for one person to change their diet, let alone <strong>almost the entire world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1394\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/brooke-lark-229136-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Vegetables\" class=\"wp-image-4056\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The biggest challenge<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What the <strong>challenge<\/strong> of this diet seems to be, is taking meat (especially red meat) almost completely <strong>out of our lives<\/strong>. Both <strong>North-America and Europe<\/strong> would have to let go of all the red meat they consume. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution to red meat consumption could be <strong>rising taxes<\/strong> to make it <strong>more expensive,<\/strong> preventing people from being able to afford such foods. However, this might just<strong> not have positive consequences. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/euro-870754_1920.jpg\" alt=\"Taxes\" class=\"wp-image-4067\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/iea.org.uk\/christopher-snowdon\/\">Christopher Snowdon<\/a> from the Institute of Economic Affair, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-46122227\">states<\/a> that taxing food would be <strong>&#8220;the next battleground for the nanny state&#8221;. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, <strong>South-East<\/strong> <strong>Asia<\/strong> would have to go on<strong> without fish<\/strong>, and <strong>Africa<\/strong> without <strong>starchy vegetables. <\/strong>This is not exactly an easy task to fulfill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the diet will help our planet<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4912\" height=\"3264\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/tim-easley-326498-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Population\" class=\"wp-image-4075\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This &#8220;heroic&#8221; diet would be able to <strong>prevent 11 million deaths a year<\/strong> because both <strong>cardiac arrest<\/strong> and some types of <strong>cancer<\/strong> would be <strong>reduced<\/strong>. On the other hand, <strong>greenhouse gases<\/strong> would also decrease, because, as we have already stated before, <strong>a big portion comes from food production. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Food production is not the only threat for climate change<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1272\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/locomotive-60539_1920.jpg\" alt=\"Greenhouse gases\" class=\"wp-image-4084\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/animalscience.ucdavis.edu\/people\/faculty\/frank-mitloehner\">Frank M. Mitloehner<\/a>, professor at the California University, <strong>meat production seems to be just as responsible for climate change as transport.<\/strong> This means, that even though fruits and vegetables contribute to a reduced emission on greenhouse gases, the fact that we still have to carry them from one place to another <strong>highly contributes to climate change.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So which is worse: excessively consuming meat or transport?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end, <strong>both<\/strong> are equally harmful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Photos: Unsplash and Pixabay<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For over the past couple of years, we have increasingly started to worry about the state our planet is in. 37 scientists have found the ultimate diet to save the world.
