There is a whole <strong>spectrum of &#8220;angriness&#8221;<\/strong>. Anger covers everything from feeling a mild frustration because <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/en\/not-sleeping-well-is-worse-for-you-than-you-thought\/\">you haven&#8217;t slept enough<\/a>, to absolute and complete fury where all hell breaks loose. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1229\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/alone-513525_1920.jpg\" alt=\"Frustration\" class=\"wp-image-3684\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is often <strong>frustrating<\/strong> to feel anger and sometimes even leaves us <strong>feeling guilty<\/strong> once it&#8217;s over. But is there an actual point to feeling this burning emotion? <strong>The<\/strong> <strong>way in which we experience anger, and how we act on it is very personal. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Feeling angry is useful<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Science seems to be increasingly uncovering ways in which <strong>personality, gender, age, and life experiences affect how we feel anger.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/hermes-rivera-265372-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Punch\" class=\"wp-image-3691\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling angry is actually very <strong>useful<\/strong> when it comes to <strong>dangerous situations. <\/strong>It forms part of our <strong>instincts<\/strong>, triggering the body&#8217;s <strong>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellmind.com\/what-is-the-fight-or-flight-response-2795194\">fight or flight<\/a>&#8220;<\/strong> <strong>response<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emotion <strong>prepares us for physical aggression. <\/strong>From the evolutive perspective: it&#8217;s part of our instincts to<strong> fight off threats, compete for resources and enforce social norms. <\/strong>However, we do <strong>have the ability to choose <\/strong>between <strong>walking away or throwing out a punch. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5039\" height=\"3359\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/kyle-glenn-678324-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Frustrated\" class=\"wp-image-3716\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A different part of the brain<\/strong> is from there on responsible for <strong>decision-making and reasoning.<\/strong> This way, <strong>we put our emotions into context<\/strong>, and remind ourselves to behave because <strong>it is not socially acceptable <\/strong>to slap someone in the face just because they ate our last cookie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What anger <em>actually<\/em> does<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling angry can be <strong>dangerous<\/strong> as it <strong>alters<\/strong> <strong>how we view risk<\/strong>. In other words, something that might be dangerous might look not-so-dangerous through the &#8220;<em>anger-glasses<\/em>&#8220;; we become more likely to <strong>underestimate the chances <\/strong>there are of having a<strong> bad outcome.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Captura-de-pantalla-2019-05-13-a-las-13.32.02.png\" alt=\"Angry man\" class=\"wp-image-3697\" width=\"569\" height=\"484\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2016\/09\/the-best-headspace-for-making-decisions\/500423\/\">Studies have shown <\/a>that anger makes us more <strong>impulsive<\/strong>, and depending on the context, it can make us either <strong>brave or reckless.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anger also affects behaviour in a <strong>social context. <\/strong>Feeling angry often means <strong>thinking negatively of others<\/strong>, resulting in <strong>blaming other people for circumstantial situations.<\/strong> The problem is, if an angry person projects blame onto someone else, it might <strong>result in irrational anger<\/strong>, because it is likely to make said person <strong>more enraged. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/adi-goldstein-339915-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Finger-pointing\" class=\"wp-image-3700\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The benefits of feeling angry<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Anger has always been considered a <strong>negative emotion<\/strong>, and should, at all times, be avoided. It is even considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholic.org\/lent\/story.php?id=32798\"><strong>deadly sin<\/strong><\/a><strong> in catholic religion. <\/strong>However, science now suggests feeling angry does, in fact, have <strong>some benefits.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anger can become a <strong>strong motivator<\/strong>, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/49722358_Anger_response_styles_in_Chinese_and_Dutch_children_A_socio-cultural_perspective_on_anger_regulation\">this <\/a>2010 study. It can also <strong>shape the way you are perceived by others.<\/strong> The American psychologist, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.mit.edu\/curhan\/www\/docs\/Articles\/15341_Readings\/Affect\/Tiedens.pdf\">Lisa Tiedens<\/a>, found out that <strong>outward anger expressions can make you more likable <\/strong>&#8211; or at least, make people be <strong>more supportive<\/strong> of you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1281\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/people-3152585_1920.jpg\" alt=\"Support\" class=\"wp-image-3706\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Anger and social status<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>She also found that <strong>people tied to a higher status position<\/strong> are more likely to <strong>describe themselves as &#8220;angry&#8221; rather than &#8220;sad&#8221;<\/strong>, and that showing this emotion in a negotiation <strong>increases success.<\/strong> This happens because &#8220;anger&#8221; is an emotion <strong>linked to adjectives like &#8220;stubborn&#8221; and &#8220;dominant&#8221;.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/men-1979261_1920.jpg\" alt=\"Meeting\" class=\"wp-image-3709\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it&#8217;s also worth noting that evidence was found that in the case of <strong>women<\/strong>, the story changes: <strong>females considered angry<\/strong> <strong>were thought less of.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Photos: Unsplash and Pixabay<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever felt bad about getting angry?
