It has now been proven that little sleep is <strong>worse for us than we thought<\/strong>: it not only leaves us feeling tired, it also has <strong>serious long-term consequences for our health.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lack of sleep<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The known effects lack of sleep has are <strong>feeling grumpy, not working at your best<\/strong>, and overall leaves you <strong>feeling very uncomfortable <\/strong>for the rest of the day. However, there is more to it than meets the eye. As it turns out, sleep deprivation has <strong>serious health consequences<\/strong> &#8211; a bad night&#8217;s sleep is more than just lack of focus and bad moods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/megan-te-boekhorst-1116023-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Lack of sleep\" class=\"wp-image-3433\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Not sleeping enough shouldn&#8217;t become a habit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One in three<\/strong> people suffer from poor sleep, because of <strong>stress, computers and taking work home.<\/strong> If having poor sleep occurs regularly, it can cause serious medical conditions, <strong>like obesity, heart disease and diabetes, as well as straight on shortening your life expectancy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How it affects your brain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting little sleep keeps our brain from regenerating itself because when sleeping less than we should, <strong>we reduce the hours our brain has to carry out this &#8220;regeneration&#8221;. <\/strong>Because of this, we are <strong>not able to fix the damage caused during the day. <\/strong>This shouldn&#8217;t be a major problem, but we should indeed be careful if it becomes a habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1156\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/brain-3168269_1920.png\" alt=\"Brain\" class=\"wp-image-3435\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Other consequences sleep deprivation has, include <strong>becoming prone to acquire illnesses <\/strong>like <strong>Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/strong> or an increase in probability of <strong>cardiovascular diseases<\/strong>. On top of that, we <strong>gradually lose the ability to remember things or learn something new. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But how much sleep do you really need?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seven hours<\/strong> of sleep seems to be <strong>the magic number<\/strong>. Which, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/psychology.berkeley.edu\/people\/matthew-p-walker\">Matthew Walker <\/a>from the Berkeley University, is the <strong>minimum number<\/strong> of hours we should sleep every day. A smaller number would mean <strong>less rest than our brains need. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/gregory-pappas-734927-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Sleeping\" class=\"wp-image-3438\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, <strong>some of us need more and some need less. <\/strong>It is often said that <strong>eight hours of sleep is a good-quality sleep<\/strong> in order to be able to function properly. It is important to<strong> find out with how many hours you function well.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why you&#8217;re not sleeping well<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Usually, if you spend your time day-dreaming about <a href=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/en\/science-proves-why-napping-is-the-way-to-go\/\">taking a nap<\/a>, chances are you are <strong>not sleeping enough<\/strong>, and you should <strong>try to increase your sleeping hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1362\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/matthew-t-rader-1199279-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Insomnia\" class=\"wp-image-3441\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Sleep deprivation can be caused by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/sleep-and-tiredness\/10-medical-reasons-for-feeling-tired\/\">several conditions<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/sleep-and-tiredness\/10-medical-reasons-for-feeling-tired\/\">,<\/a> like for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/obstructive-sleep-apnoea\/\"><strong>sleep apnoea<\/strong>.<\/a> However, it is often just a case of <strong>bad sleeping habits.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What lack of sleep does to you<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s obvious that occasionally not sleeping well won&#8217;t really affect your health other than you feeling <strong>irritable and tired<\/strong>. But it does <strong>become a problem after several sleepless nights.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" src=\"https:\/\/curiosifymagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/icons8-team-1221958-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"Irritated\" class=\"wp-image-3444\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The brain becomes <strong>foggy<\/strong>, which will cause <strong>difficulties focusing and making decisions. <\/strong>You start feeling <strong>gloomy and occasionally fall asleep during the day.<\/strong> The risk of <strong>injuries and accidents<\/strong> rises. If then you still can&#8217;t get a good night&#8217;s sleep, consequences will worsen.
